A carat of diamonds vs. a carat of sapphires? It’s like the childhood joke: Which is heavier a pound of feathers or a pound of bricks. They both weight a pound, but the bricks will take up less space than the feathers.
Similar to bricks and feathers, gemstones and diamonds have different densities. So while a 1 carat diamond may be 6.5mm round, the same size sapphire will weigh about 1.46 carats. That’s because sapphire is more dense than diamond.
If you’re looking to order a colored stone, it’s best to order it in terms of the physical size you need rather than carat weight. Remember, Carat is a measurement of weight, not size.
So often customers will order a stone based on the size equivalent of a diamond. In other words, they’ll order a 1 carat sapphire expecting the stone to be 6.5mm. But when the sapphire arrives, it’ll be smaller than they expected, again, because sapphire is more dense than diamond.
Any reputable jeweler should be able to help you determine what size colored stone you need.
