A customer recently ordered an amber leaf necklace from our collection of amber jewelry on our JewelryImpressions.com website. After she received it, she posted a comment that the item was too light weight to be amber. It had to be “plastic or some kind of tree resin.”
Of course, I had to reply to her comment that she was absolutely correct the necklace was, indeed, made with “some kind of tree resin.”
Did you know that amber is really tree resin that has hardened over time? In order for tree resin to be called amber, it must be at least 1 million years old. Copal refers to tree resin that is less than 1 million years old.
One of the most telling identifying characteristics of amber is that it floats in saturated salt water. So while amber looks as though it may be very heavy, in reality, it is very light. Remember this next time you see a chunky piece of amber jewelry you love.
